Great teams, unreal rivalry.
As a Germany fan I remembered this as a 50-50 game that ended in heartbreak right before penalties. The reality was that Italy was far better for most of the game. They had a better team overall and the clearer chances throughout. This was the beginning of the national team resurgence for Germany but in hindsight this team wasn’t quite there yet. As much as it pains me to admit, Italy were clear deserved winners.

The goal scored by Grosso and his celebration are forever etched in my memory. One of the most entertaining world cup matches I have seen. Wow!
Italy is my favorite team and country even though I’m not Italian. This is my favorite Italy match against another of my favorite teams, Germany. Back then they had so many superstars. Hope Italy can awake such prowess they once had.
I’m an Indonesian but my favorite national football team is Italy..I sobbed like a baby when Grosso scored,and laughing really hard when Del Piero scored in final minutes..Forza Gli Azzurri..

The BEST World Cup match I have ever seen! High tempo the whole 120 minutes. Amazing atmosphere. Too bad it was the semis and not the final itself. And too bad there had to be a loser. Amazing game!
This is still the greatest game of football I have ever watched
The level of intensity, passion and excitement was unbelievable in this match. All awake well into midnight in India, Buffon’s saves were giving us heart attacks and finally Grosso’s goal erupted a volcano.
The last four minutes of this match will NEVER be forgotten by those who participated and those who watched it live. Fourteen years later, I still screamed my lungs out
I have not seen a better World Cup match in my lifetime (1998-now). Even though Germany have never beaten Italy in a World Cup game, those match-ups are always epic.
The Italian defence was so solid. I was only able to see highlights. Now that I’m able to see the full game, I just realised how much of an obstacle Italy was that year. This team was a walking fortress.
Totti is my all time favorite player. Totti, Pirlo, and Gattuso were a great combination of midfield players. I remember watching this game live as a kid. Amazing game.
I remember my father screaming “Score this goal, Pirlo!” as in “Don’t risk a pass or whatever!” Pirlo instead passed to Grosso and the rest is history 😃
When Del Piero scored it happened so fast that I actually didn’t exult. I literally stared at the TV, stunned. Then I looked at my father and I just smiled. My father rose up from his armchair and said: “Well, I’ll now go to sleep.”

I’m gonna go as far as to say this is the most perfect match I’ve ever watched in my whole life. Rewatching now is still as exciting as seeing it live back then. The whole match plays out like a movie. From start to finish it’s an absolute behemoth of a match and I would put it up as one of the greatest sporting moments of all time.

Italy won by penalties in 2006 and it was a massive exorcism for the Italians because they lost on penalties in the 1/2 of 1990 vs Argentina , in the final of 1994 vs Brazil and in the 1/4 of 1998 vs France . Plus they were completely robbed by Korea in 2002
